MGPS and ICAF
The numbers
Marine Growth Prevention Systems (MGPS) are essential for protecting submerged structures and equipment from the damaging effects of biofouling. This technology is specifically designed to prevent the accumulation of marine organisms such as barnacles, algae, and mussels, which can severely impact the efficiency and lifespan of maritime assets.
How MGPS Works
MGPS operates by using low-level electrical currents to release ions from specially designed anodes into the surrounding water. These ions create an environment that inhibits the growth and attachment of marine organisms to surfaces. The system can be tailored to protect a wide range of submerged equipment, including ship hulls, propellers, seachests, and internal cooling systems.
Benefits of MGPS
- Effective Protection: MGPS provides reliable and continuous protection against marine growth, reducing the need for frequent cleaning and maintenance.
- Environmental Sustainability: The system offers an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical treatments, reducing the use of harmful substances in marine environments.
- Cost Efficiency: By preventing biofouling, MGPS helps maintain optimal performance, leading to lower fuel consumption, reduced maintenance costs, and extended equipment life.
- Versatility: MGPS can be customized to suit various applications, from large commercial vessels and offshore platforms to smaller boats and port infrastructure.
Applications
- Seachests and Box Coolers: Ensure the efficient operation of seawater cooling systems by preventing blockages.
- Internal Cooling Systems: Maintain clean internal pipework and heat exchangers, reducing the need for extensive cleaning routines.

Type of anodes
Copper (Cu) Anodes
Copper anodes are used to prevent marine fouling in cooling pipework, strainers, heat exchangers, pumps, and box coolers.
OES Group anodes prevent blockages and cooling inefficiency, which can lead to damage of main auxiliary equipment.”
Aluminium (Al) Anodes
Aluminium anodes are used alongside copper anodes to provide comprehensive corrosion protection in ferrous cooling pipework. This combination effectively prevents both corrosion and marine fouling, ensuring the longevity and efficiency of the cooling system.
Ferrous (Fe) Anodes
Ferrous anodes are used together with copper-alloyed anodes to provide targeted corrosion protection in copper/nickel cooling pipework. This combination helps prevent electrochemical reactions that could cause corrosion, ensuring the durability and integrity of the cooling system over time.
